Month 6: Alter Egos and Undercover Help Challenges
The Alter Egos challenge correlates directly with Month 5’s Board of Directors Challenge. This month, my task was to identify the roles that I fulfill most often in my life and figure out which of my inspirational Directors would be a good role model for that specific identity.
I identified eight roles I commonly fulfill: son, brother, employee, athlete, Apogee Young Man, friend, student, and leader. Then I created a descriptive phrase for each role, the attributes needed to perform that role well, and which of my Directors is a good example for that role.
For the son role, my phrase was “Quick to help and obey”. The attributes needed are obedience, initiative, and respect, and my inspirational Directors are Jesus and my dad.
For the brother role, my phrase was “Quick to help, protect, and support”. The attributes needed are being helpful, protective, supportive, and ready to give advice, and my inspirational Director is my dad.
For the employee role, my phrase was “Work better every day than the one before”. The attributes needed are obedience and the skills of being industrious, resourceful, and ambitious. My inspirational Directors are Jesus, my dad, and Thomas Sowell.
For the athlete role, my phrase was “Work harder with every workout”. The attributes I desire are to be savage, enduring, ambitious, and industrious. My inspirational Director is Tim Kennedy.
For the Apogee Young Man role, my phrase was “Show up every day for everyone around me”. The attributes I desire are to be responsible, industrious, and helpful, and I can use any of my Directors as examples for this role.
For the friend role, my phrase was “Be the man those around me depend on”. The attributes I desire are helpful, supportive, encouraging, and advisory. My inspirational Directors are Jesus and my dad.
For the student role, my phrase was “Put in the same amount of effort no matter the task”. The attributes I desire are to be industrious and possess a passion to learn, and my inspirational Directors are Charlie Kirk, Ron Paul, Joel Salatin, Thomas Sowell, Cliffe Knechtte, Vivek Ramaswamey, and Donald Trump.
For the leader role, my phrase was “Be everyone’s example in word and in deed”. The attributes I desire are to be honorable, industrious, supportive, and resourceful. I can use any of my Directors as examples for this role.
I enjoyed how this challenge continued the project from last month and kept the conversation happening in my mind. It made me think through how my role models help me in my own roles that I take on throughout my life.
Additionally, I think it’s very helpful to examine how you should be behaving in your roles, which is another perk for this project. I hope I will look back on this project as my life continues to see how I’ve improved or remind me to keep doing my best.
Undercover Help Challenge
It’s all well and good to grow yourself and make yourself a better person, but we’re being selfish if helping others isn’t a part of that journey. This challenge helps you spot opportunities to give aid to those around you with the goal of not being discovered.
I was able to find 13 different opportunities to help others. Twelve of those tasks were done for my family, and one was done for my boss. I was only caught on one occasion when I bought some groceries for my family; my mom paid me back the next day.
I would have liked to do something for a stranger or someone less close to me, but I did not spot any opportunities that were more than basic civility. However, I am pleased with what I could do, as I feel that all the jobs I did were large enough actually to benefit the individual affected.
